Before the computer age, improving a home can mean adding electrical power to some rooms. The inexperienced home owner would do well to take a course at the local home improvement store or hiring a contractor if this is a major job calling for extra wiring running throughout the home or adding junction boxes or circuits. The risks of mixing an electrical home improvement job with an inexperienced do-it-yourselfer are obvious. Some less obvious problems include on the job accidents that are often covered by the electrician's insurance. Simple jobs Working with a wall outlet is one of the electrical home improvement jobs that a homeowner can be involved. An outlet sometimes has to be added to cater additional appliances or computer equipment. As part of a job of reconfiguring a room, sometime an outlet has to be shifted. For such easy electrical home improvement tasks, there is basic information available that will increase the do-it-yourselfer's confidence and make the job safer. Always wear rubber-soled shoes and avoid wet floors to avoid becoming part of a completed circuit when working with electricity. Also avoid using metal ladders. Rubber-soled shoes are useless if they are standing on metal surface. Check the grips on old tools making sure they are not worn and that your tools have rubber grips. Ponder carefully about wearing rings while performing those electrical home improvement jobs. Check your local building codes to make sure that the job you are planning is legal. Check that the correct circuit breaker is off as it's not enough to turn off a light switch before starting on your electrical home improvement job. The wiring will be done in a uniform manner if a professional electrician wired your home. You may find that the wiring has been done in a more creative way if you are planning to perform electrical home improvement jobs on a home that pre-dates your local building codes. Normally, the black wires are the "hot" wires that carry the electrical current from the breaker box to the switch or outlet. The white wire is the "neutral" wire which carries the unused electricity back to the breaker. The plain or green wire is the "ground" wire which is there to carry extra electricity back to the breaker then to a rod in the ground outside where it is rendered safe. Take care in working with electrical circuits and try not to become part of one and remember when working on an electrical home improvement job.
